Scales Technique – Part 1

If practised carefully scale playing helps develop good finger action, strength, agility, coordination, accuracy, ‘key sense’ and an appreciation of good fingering. For all these reasons most keyboard teachers will insist on certain ‘technical’ exercises so that the student builds up his playing technique. As the player develops these fundamental skills he feels more confident at moving forward and tackling ever more demanding pieces.

For those wishing to develop their left hand skills:-

Practice SEPARATE hands at first. Keep the notes even (touch and rhythm). Always use the fingerings given so that they become ‘automatic’ (never deviate from them).
Practice LEGATO – imagine a See-Saw. As one finger rises the next descends. When playing hands together LISTEN carefully and ensure the hands are strictly together. Beginners will often allow the Left Hand to be ‘pulled along’ by the stronger Right hand.
