Yamaha PSR-S900 Information
Add commentWritten and/or posted by James WoodcockView commentsWith 891 instrumental voices PSR-S900 offers the player a huge sonic palette. Most of these voices are coming from high end models – including 20 Live! Voices, 26 Cool! Voices and 22 Sweet! Voices as well as 15 Mega! Voices and even 23 Super Articulation Voices included.
The amazing Super Articulation voices open a completely new level of sonic realism and expressiveness. You’ll feel as if you’re playing the real thing! Super Articulation Voices give you the unique performance characteristics of each instrument and are perfect for playing solo passages and legato melodies, intelligently adding the right expressive nuances to your performance as you play. The expanded range of Mega! Voices feature various playing techniques and performance sounds – such as finger slides and fret noise on Guitar Voices and shakes on Trumpet voices – designed specifically to enhance playback of the 305 built-in Styles.
For each Style there are four One Touch Setting so that you get the perfect instrumental setting by pressing just one button. The OTS-Link-Function allows you to change automatically through the One Touch Setting just by changing the Style-variation.
If you want to play a certain song and don’t know which style to choose, the powerful Music Finder feature can help. Simply select a song title or a keyword, all appropriate panel settings are reconfigured to match the genre, including the appropriate voices, style and effects. Music Finder+ also works with the Internet Direct Connection (IDC) feature, allowing you to download additional free Music Finder records and collections in addition to the wide selection built in to the instrument.
The colour LCD display shows the song notation of a MIDI file (score) as well as lyrics (for MIDI songs that have score and lyric data). A special display function allows you to show text files you’ve created on a computer – making it possible to display lyrics for songs that maybe don’t have lyric data, or for creating your own onscreen chord charts and song memos. And to get your karaoke party swinging, PSR-S900 has a Video Output so that you can show the keyboard’s display on a TV or projector.
Connect a microphone and automatically have backing singers mixed with your voice – that’s the PSR-S900′s Vocal Harmony Feature. . A powerful Bass-Reflex-speaker system and 2 x 12 watts amplification guarantees outstanding realism of sound, whilst the integrated Network-connector (LAN-Port) ensures ease of use with Yamaha’s unique Internet Direct Connection (IDC) feature. The USB to device connection opens the possibility to connect USB storage devices such as thumb drives to the instrument, giving you virtually unlimited memory capacity for user registrations, styles and songs. The USB connection also allows you to make your own CD-quality recordings at home with a minimum of fuss, utilizing the new USB Audio Recorder.

Demos of this machine by both Michel Vonken, and Peter Baartmans are available on the web. The specifications have been released two months ago. But where, Oh where are they? No-one, including Yamaha themselves know when the S900 is to be released. I am told that it has glitches that need sorting out, but how long does that take (if it is true!). RRP is £1345, but we have pre-ordered one at £989, and sold the keyboard it is replacing.
Come on Yamaha – I feel you can do better than this!
Regards,
John

Yamaha Personal Keyboard Owner only releases ‘official’ information that I have received from Yamaha themselves. I don’t post rumours, but I went to EXPO yesterday and the article is on the news page if you want to find out more.
More information will follow, you will just have to be patient
Thank you for these previews! Awhile ago I contacted Yamaha Corp. for info, but received nothing. I have students wanting step-up models of either PSR3000 or the S900. Thank you for your excellent comparisons.

Hello, James:
I am very interested in purchasing a PSR-S900, but I have a few questions to ask you if you could possibly bear with me:
1. If the chord chart or score appears on the screen of the PSR-S900 when you have composed a song can you copy that to a file on your computer so that you have the score to print out?
2. Can you copy what you have composed on the PSR-S900 to a file on the computer?
3. If you have a music file on the computer of backing tracks can you copy those to one of the tracks on the PSR-S900 and then add other tracks to it?
4. Can you add the lead vocals to one of the tracks on the PSR-S900?
Many thanks for your patience. Hope you can answer these questions for me.

1. If your DAW supports XF
2. The Sequencer of the PSR-S900 is based on an XG Midi File so yes
3. If the Music File on the PC is a MIDI File
4. When you have finished your MIDI recording, you can copy the MIDI file in real time to a Memory stick as a .wav file. When this is happening, you can add an Audio source (ie Vocals)

Hi, James:
Thank you for your reply. I’m not a technician, and I had to try and look up all your technical references in your answer as I did not have a clue what you were talking about. I still don’t know what XF is. But it appears that the PSR-S900 only deals with MIDI files. I have never dealt with them, even though I do have a Yamaha PSR-500 which I have used for the last nearly twenty years. I was under the impression that I could record a full demo on this machine and then transfer the files to a file on my computer as a wave or mp3 file. This is most disappointing. Is there a Yamaha machine out there that does this and allows me to record my voice and mix? The most important thing on the machine is the Styles functions. This is what I base my compositions on. Any suggestions? Or, failing that, can you point me to a place that explains Midi to me in simple language and not tech talk?
Many thanks,
L. Marshall

You can record to Wave no problem, but wave isn’t editable to the point where you can view the chords and notes of course.
XF is a type of MIDI file and is supported by the PSR-S900.
MIDI file captures what notes you press, how hard, how long, what voice you selected etc, but if you want to share with friends or write to an Audio CD, recording straight to Wave is the way to go via the new record feature where you can directly save to USB stick in this format.
Hello James, here is a Swede who is interested of PSR-S900. My questing is: Will there be an usermanual in Swedish ?? If j buy this keyboard in Sweden. Will be grateful for an answer.

I am not sure, I do know from looking at the Yamaha Manual Online Download area that there isn’t a Swedish version there though at the moment.

Hi, looking at buying one of these in the fairly distant future… was wondering if you can plug it in to external speakers (like at a small church with no fold back) and still have the built in speakers work? Thanx

The PSR-S900 does support what you are after.

Hi,
If i make my own or buy a style made for the new PSR-S700/PSR-S900 will it work on my Tyros2 also?
(http://www.jameswoodcock.co.uk) December 6th, 2007 at 3:02 pm
PSR-S700/S900 styles should work on Tyros 2.
I have had my PSR S900 for about a month i would like to know if there is a way to recored a song to a memory stick or card without it being in MIDI format. Is there a way? Please help !
(http://www.jameswoodcock.co.uk) January 23rd, 2008 at 1:50 pm
You can record directly to a USB Stick in *.wav (wave format) with the PSR-S900. Please refer to your manual for more information under ‘USB Audio Recorder’.
Would I be able to use the S900 with a Roland MC50 sequencer? Will it respond to Pg changes and CC messages?
Hello? I’m Tokunbo from Nigeria. I don’t know which of the products; PSR2000, PSR3000 or PSR S900, that has a good quality Grand Piano voice. I like the PSR S900 but I’m confused as to which to buy for myself. Could you please recommend (for mixing and Demo)? Thank you so much, Sir.
Hello,
I am new to the Yamaha Personal Keyboard Owner site and I’ve yet not discovered how to communicate with others?
I’ve had a question concerning my PSR-S900 and somebody did return a response.
I’ve been reading comments and discussions about the PSR-S900 and noted that there are different versions of PSR-S900? I have the 1.02 and I was wandering if this is an old or new version. Do I need to download software to upgrade my keyboard if this is the old version?
Any comments and response would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Fred: http://www.yamahapkowner.com/?p=279
These firmware downloads update your keyboard. Instructions are included within the downloads.
(http://www.jameswoodcock.co.uk) February 5th, 2008 at 10:57 am
Tokunbo: The 3000 and S900 have the latest piano sounds for keyboards.
James: Yes it does respond to most program and control changes.
Hi
do you know if Tyros 2 registrations can be loaded on to a psr s900?
many thanks
Robin
(http://www.jameswoodcock.co.uk) February 20th, 2008 at 10:56 am
There is a free official Yamaha product called ‘Voice Creator’ here: http://music.yamaha.com/products/downloads.html?productId=107861
This is great for converting various files from CVP and PSR-S to Tyros 2, however the other way around is not possible unless you try third party software. You would be best asking on the forum for this.
Hello, Sir? I’m Tokunbo from Nigeria. Thank you for recommending the Yamaha PSR-S900. I’m used to sequencing with my keyboard connected to my pc but i can’t get good quality voices with my software(Cakewalk Pro Audio 9)from my Yamaha PSR-S900. I want to be able to use the voices from my keyboard with my software, please help. Thank you, Sir.
(http://www.jameswoodcock.co.uk) March 9th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
You will need the latest USB drivers from the official Yamaha website and also if you search the forum, there might be a post in regards to an ‘instrument definition’ file that will be compatible with Cakewalk so you can select all of the instruments available.

Hi,
I have had this keyboard (PSR-S900) about half year.
but i have one question,
where can i download additional sound effects or the most important is, to download additional Vocal Harmony?
thanks
Dear Friends
Is it possible to make your pattern mode on s900 like it is possible on motif? if yes how can you do it? on the machin or on computer software?
Thanks in advance!
Daro
(http://www.jameswoodcock.co.uk) May 29th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
@Aji: Yamaha themselves have not created any additional items for this as far as I am aware.
@Darius: If you take a style off your keyboard, rename it to *.mid instead of *.sty on your computer, you should be able to edit it in a music notation application.
If you need any help with this, please download the Tyros 2 manual (isn’t in the PSR-S900 one) and view page 167 for more information.
Hello james
I have in my little studio PSR-S900 and I woul´d like to know :
If – in the same conditions – instead PSR-S900 I work with TYROS 2, the difference of the recording material quality will be very big ? I mean : if I operate with the same megavoices……or articulation voices and i use the same styles to.
The difference will be audible for a profesional person …….or can be detected only for special instruments ? Sorry for my english !
(http://www.jameswoodcock.co.uk) June 9th, 2008 at 10:53 am
The difference includes Compressor, stereo sampled drums and more Mega & S-art voices.
If you need more help, please ask on the forum…
Excuse me, James, I just came across this interesting page. As to your last post, I have 2 questions:
1. Does it mean that similar results can be obtained if I use a PSR S900 and process the files using a computer (e.g.: add compressor effect)?
2. Does the PSRS 900 not have stereo drums? Or is it that it cannot sample drums? Thanks a lot!!!
(http://www.jameswoodcock.co.uk) June 24th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
@George: 1. I am not sure, you might get similar results, but it depends on what application you use and what settings you apply to the recording.
2. Drums are not stereo sampled, sampling is not available.
Can registrations created on a PSR 2000 be converted
so they can be used ona S900.
I just sold my Psr 2000 and bought a S900
Now I have a ton of PSR 2000 Reg files that don’t work on the S900.
i’ve been used the S900 for 6 months.. i think that this is the best for this time… but i want to share an experience that if i play S900 with powerful volume level for more then 1 hour, I found that the power amplifier for both of speakers system will drop.. WHY?…
If you wanna be help for having any song style for being operated on PSR S-series.. I can do that… here is my email ” choralsound@telkom.net “

Hi,
I am currently using a PSR640 yamaha keyboard for live performance using midi-files on floppy disc. With the PSRS900 will i be able to load my midifiles onto the keyboard using a USB memory stick? I assume the files can then be stored on the keyboards hard drive??
Please advise..
Thanks,
Graeme.
(http://www.jameswoodcock.co.uk) December 15th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
The keyboard does not have a hard drive, however you can put the MIDI files on a USB stick.
Can you step-record on the PSR’s sequencer as you can on most other workstations as well as live recording?
Thanks.
Ray

You are best contacting your local Yamaha dealer with this issue.
Dear all,
I would like to know if I can use external WAV files in the PSR-S700 styles. The Tyros 3 can do that…
I would like to know if this is possible in the PSR-S900 as well, because I want to add WAV files from my library as percussion instruments in some styles.
Thanks for any help regarding this matter.
(http://www.jameswoodcock.co.uk) June 24th, 2009 at 8:11 am
No not possible I am afraid…
S700 will not play *.wav files. S900 will only playback from stick.

You both would be best placing this on the forum
HI James, I just purchased PSR S900, I can say its 3 days baby… I need you help regarding user styles. I found unlimited Styles in Google, How can use them in S900 and How can we protect S900 by virus while we plugin & Out the USB and LAN. Please advise me..
Thanks
Josh
(http://www.jameswoodcock.co.uk) November 11th, 2009 at 9:39 am
Virus’s are not an issue as it connects directly to Yamaha and not the wider Internet. Styles (as long as they are compatible) can be used by copying them onto a USB stick and selecting the styles by first pressing one of the style buttons, tabbing to the USB page and locating the style.
If you have any problems please use the forum

hi James
I would like to know the difference between the psr s900 and the psr s910
Thanks
I recently noticed on my PSR s900 that a handful of the styles especially the acoustic rock style sounds like a scrached LP, almost like the sound you would get from a blown speaker. Most backgrounds are crystal sharp but check out the acoustic rock and let me know if it is normal or do I have a problem. Appreciate anyones help.
1. If I download a midi file from
the internet onto a thumb drive, can I then play that file on the
PSR-S900 directly or do I have to transfer it to the S900 memory?
2. If I have to transfer it to the S900 memory, how big is that memory or
approximately how many 60kb midi files can I store?
hello can someone tell me why when i copy a wav to my yamaha psr-s900 dont wana play this ? can i copy song from my computer to my yamaha psr-s900 what format of wav ?
